Aquia Landing is located on a peninsula that juts into the mouth of Aquia Creek on the Potomac River.
Aquia Landing was the RF&P Railroad terminus from 1842-1872, and the only direct rail-to-steamboat transfer point on the Potomac River between Richmond, VA.
It was the site of one of the war's earliest military engagements and became a major supply base for the Army of the Potomac in three separate campaigns. The Battle of Aquia Creek was an exchange of cannon fire between Union Navy gunboats and Confederate shore batteries on the Potomac River. The battle took place from May 29, 1861 to June 1, 1861.
